It was two years ago when I started my studies and when I first asked myself this question: should university education be free for all?
First of all, lets imagine that everybody has to pay for studying and there is no such thing as welfare, helping poorer students to go through studies without begging for food. If education wasnt free, there would be so many young, intelligent people who wouldnt have the chance to study and to be educated and then to find a proper job. what is more, in case of obligatory paying for studying, some part of the students would be lowering the quality of education, as they were just using their money in order to pass the exams, not even trying to learn and get the knowledge and passing the exams in the traditional way
On the other hand, if there wasnt this group of student paying for getting the chance to study, the authorities of the Universities wouldnt have enough funds to prepare proper equipment for the students, not only enough classes to teach them, but also subsidised books, so student could afford them.
To sum up, making university education free for all is not the best idea. Unless our GDP will rise, taxes will be lowered and the government will have enough money to give the chance to study to everyone, despite his financial. What could be changed, is the number of people getting grants and the sum of money students have to pay.
